What’s a thing you wish schools actually taught?
How to whistle.
Not the pleasant little whistle one makes while strolling down the sidewalk without a care in the world. I mean the whistle.
The one requiring four fingers shoved into your mouth that produces a sound capable of stopping traffic, summoning children from three blocks away, calling livestock home, or making every dog within a respectable radius reconsider its afternoon plans.
I cannot do it.
I just tried it, and tell me why the four-finger whistle feels less like a useful life skill and more like oral gymnastics?
Four fingers in your mouth, tongue folded somewhere it has apparently never been before, lips positioned just so, then blow.
This isn’t whistling. This is Olympic cross-training.
I have watched people do it my entire life. Four fingers go in, one mighty breath comes out, and suddenly they possess the acoustic authority of a freight train.
I put four fingers in my mouth and produce wind.
This feels particularly unfair because I attended school for many years. I learned mathematics, science, history, English, geography, and enough other things to become a reasonably functioning member of society. I am not suggesting we should have sacrificed any of them.
I simply believe that somewhere between kindergarten and graduation, we could have spared forty-five minutes for the four-finger whistle.
Instead, school took precisely the opposite approach.
“Get your fingers out of your mouth.”
For years.
Hands away from your face. Stop chewing your pencil. Don’t put that in your mouth. Wash your hands.
Excellent advice, certainly.
But apparently while we were being taught proper hygiene, an entire underground society of people was learning how to turn four fingers and a tongue into a public-address system.
Some of them don’t even need the fingers.
These people simply curl their tongue, purse their lips, and release a noise that could redirect migrating geese.
And yet here I am—a fully educated adult who can locate the equator, write a respectable sentence, and generally navigate civilization…
but if you’re fifty yards away and I need your attention?
I have to yell like a commoner.
