There was a time when money made noise.
A crisp dollar bill had its own sound. So did a handful of coins hitting the floor.
You could fold it, count it, lose it in the washing machine, or discover a twenty-dollar bill in an old coat pocket and feel as though you’d won the lottery.
Now somebody has invented a coin that doesn’t jingle, a wallet without leather, and a way to buy money with money in the hope that somebody else will pay more money for that money.
Find a penny, pick it up. All day long, you’ll have good luck.
I still believe that. And if I spot a quarter in the grocery store parking lot, you can bet I’m picking it up.
Now I’ve been told that one Bitcoin can be divided into a hundred million tiny pieces.
A hundred million?
Why do I suddenly feel like somebody just handed me a puzzle with no picture on the box?
Apparently, dividing something into smaller pieces doesn’t make it less valuable. A dollar has a hundred cents. Bitcoin has a hundred million little things called satoshis.
Satoshis.
I had to read that twice.
I must admit, the whole concept is intriguing. Do I understand it? Not particularly. Am I interested in understanding it?
Well, let’s not get carried away.
I prefer real estate, land, and stocks. Things I can walk on, drive past, or at least recognize on a financial statement.
As for cryptocurrency, I’ll leave that to the people who understand it.
I’ve got a perfectly good quarter in my pocket.
And I know exactly what it’s worth.
