What is the best purchase you have ever made?
White chalk across the top read “$5.” At first glance, that was all there was to see.
The resale shop was an old house where every room held collections that had outlived their owners. I wandered through the maze of rooms, opening doors, peeking into corners, and eventually climbing a narrow staircase to the attic.
There was something everywhere—collapsed furniture, heavy boxes, forgotten glassware, and fading photographs.
I moved slowly, but nothing seemed to follow me home.
Then I noticed it.
It was a small, black metal cabinet with two drawers, reminiscent of the old school card catalogs. Dusty and worn, it made me stop.
I reached down and pulled a drawer open.
It was full of random things.
I stood there, looking into the quiet remnants of someone else’s life.
I only looked long enough to see that it contained an assortment of old items before quietly sliding the drawer closed.
I picked up the cabinet and carried it downstairs.
The cashier smiled and said, “Five dollars.”
“Sounds good,” I replied.
No bidding. No negotiations. Just five dollars and a dusty cabinet that somehow found its way into my car.
At home, I wiped away the grime and placed it in my living room.
Life took over.
Tucked away with wooden crates and old books, it waited patiently in the corner of my home for nearly seven years.
I never opened the drawers again until today.
I found a story waiting to be told.
